Mitchell: What happens inside the American Legion

As an officer in the Westminster American Legion Post 31, I have had numerous people ask me: What does the American Legion do? It is first and foremost a service organization. Within most American Legions are the "Legion Family." This includes the American Legion, the Sons of the American Legion, the Legion Riders and the Auxiliary.

November 17, 2017: 

Dayhoff: American Legion, Veterans Day have storied history in Carroll County

About 50 military veterans and family members gathered on Veterans Day at the former Westminster Armory on Longwell Avenue. As long as anyone can remember, Carroll Post No. 31 of the American Legion has conducted a Veterans Day service at the historic armory.

September 6th, 2017:

Carroll Post #31 of the American Legion presents scholarships

Carroll Post #31 of the American Legion celebrated the 20th anniversary of its scholarship program on June 21, awarding scholarships to graduating students from both Westminster and Winters Mill high schools. Two-year, $2,000 awards are presented based on character, leadership, Americanism, financial need and scholastic achievement.

Fallen Maryland heroes remembered at Gerstell Academy

Veterans, families, Carroll County officials and local residents crammed together in Gerstell Academy's gymnasium Saturday afternoon to honor those who lost their lives in the line of duty. Outside, in front of Gerstell, 9,000 flags stood in the wet ground, under gray clouds. Each flag represented a Marylander who lost their life protecting the country.

Westminster observes Memorial Day with lively parade, somber service

Men, women and children lined the streets of Main Street from Railroad Avenue to North Church Street as they waved and clapped on band members, boy and girl scouts, members of various clubs and veterans. The 149th annual Westminster Memorial Day parade marched down Main Street at 10 a.m.
